The VTA is currently involved in a set of projects to expand broadband and cellular service where there is none, and prepare for the rising expectations of broadband speed identified by state and federal policymakers. Whenever possible, the VTA tries to focus on projects that support the multiple goals, and so many of the VTA’s projects are interrelated. The VTA is not a retail service provider, and works by helping to finance and develop the infrastructure needed by the retail providers of broadband and cellular services. The VTA has also proposed a program of work over the next 3 years, supported by the Governor’s FY 2012 budget request, that builds on and extends the reach of projects funded through ARRA, state, and private dollars, and focuses new resources and new strategies on those parts of the goals where progress has lagged.
