Cellular Infrastructure

The VTA is involved with two types of projects, traditional towers and small-cell technology.

Traditional Cell Towers

Construction of tower facilities includes site preparation, providing electricity to the site and installing back-up systems, as well as tower construction and radio frequency transmission equipment installation. In less populated areas, national providers often do not consider cell tower installation economically feasible.

The VTA is using funding to identify potential locations, select sites, and manage tower construction. We then enter into long-term lease agreements with cell service providers who will install their transmission equipment on a tower. Multiple national cell service providers, plus local emergency services and utilities will all have the opportunity to lease space on each VTA-owned tower.

Small-cell Technology

Radio equipment mounted on utility poles or buildings are well suited to provide mobile broadband and cellular service to more isolated geographic areas. See the CoverageCo (left menu) project for details.
